Dental sealants are a thin coating applied on the chewing surface of the premolars and secondary molars of children to help prevent decay. When these molars have deep crevices food and bacteria tend to get trapped in them causing cavities. These sealants should be removed if they show signs of excessive wear or are damaged.
Most children and teenagers have not acquired the best dietary habits (a great deal of candy and other sweets) or oral hygiene practices, making them more prone to developing cavities. Sealants offer a way to protect their permanent molars from decay.
When a child’s premolars come in between the ages of 9 and 11 sealants may be applied to these molars to protect them from decay. Between the ages of 10-12 the secondary molars come in and sealants should be applied to protect them.
